Chirp! Bird Song USA +
About Chirp! Bird Song USA +
Chirp! The original app for identifying and learning bird songs - and still the best! How often do you hear songs and calls of birds around you - wouldn't it be good to know what they are?
Chirp! has been developed by nature specialists, iSpiny, specifically to help you learn and identify bird songs. It is also a great feel-good pick-me-up! Listen and learn over 300 bird songs and calls from across mainland USA, with up to 34 seconds of song for each bird, and alternative recordings for some birds. The songs and calls are of the highest quality, most provided by the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
On first use, Chirp! selects birds for your current location, but then you are free to select any state (or group of states) on the Map Screen, to learn the common species from east to west and north to south. Or you may prefer to select all birds to learn the whole range! Try sorting by song style, so that you can compare birds that hoot and coo, or those with high pitched songs for example. If you are a beginner, sort the birds by commonness, so you can listen to the most common ones first, then move on to less frequent backyard visitors.
Make a shortlist of your favourites so that you can find them quickly (tap the + icon above the image to add birds to your favorites list).
After listening, try the quiz to test your memory. Answer fast to earn a score multiplier and get on the high score table! Experienced birders can use the custom quiz to help distinguish and learn similar songs.
And when you need a rest, try the slideshow feature - choose which birds to include, maybe add background bird song, then simply relax. If you want to continue learning while you relax, switch the voiceover on (iOS 7+ only) and hear the name of the bird announced at the end of each clip. This is also a good way of competing with the family - who can say the name of the bird first?!
